Christian Education

Safe Sanctuary Policy:

Policies and procedures have been adopted to help keep our church a safe sanctuary for our children and youth.  Fortunately, this is not initiated in response to problems within Salem UMC, but it is prompted by awareness of problems in other churches that have allowed for the abuse of children by paid and unpaid child and youth workers in the church, as well as by other minors.  The advice of experts has shaped our response and assures us that what helps protect our children and youth also helps protect our church from unfounded charges and legal liability.  These policies and procedures will enhance our service of Christ.

Sunday School

Sunday School meets every Sunday beginning the second Sunday in September and ends the third Sunday in May. Classes offered are as follows:

  • Preschool (3-5 yr. olds)
  • Kindergarten
  • Grade 1
  • Grade 2
  • Grade 3
  • Grade 4
  • Grade 5
  • Grade 6
  • Grade 7
  • Grade 8
  • High School (9th through 12th grades)
  • Visions (Adults)
  • For Men Only (Adults)

Registration:  Each student will have a registration card.  The card provides the staff with information on interests, allergies, birth date, and emergency contact.  Students can be registered at any time during the year.

Rally Day:  Rally Day is when Sunday School resumes in the fall.  Rally Day 2018 is September 9. 2018  On this day, the new 7th graders are presented with Bibles.

Attendance:  Regular attendance in the variety of educational programs is important to children, youth, and adults. Consistency develops a sense of belonging.  In our world of bits and pieces, it is very important for each of us to have this kind of stability and opportunity to grow in faith.  Parental participation in adult classes or as teachers/helpers displays the clear message to children that studying and learning God’s Word is important.

Offering:  Offerings are taken during all Sunday School classes.  Offering envelopes for children are available through the Sunday School teachers or the church office. These monies go into the general ministry budget and offset Sunday School expenses.

Christmas Program:  There is a Sunday School Christmas Program.  It is presented during the worship service on a Sunday in December.  Watch the Kaleidoscope for dates.

Sunday School Music Groups:  The music groups meet during the time between worship and Sunday School – 10:00-10:30. Each group sings in the worship service several times during the Sunday School year.

***Nursery Care is available during Sunday School for infants through 2 years old.***

Cradle Call

Upon the birth of a child to a church member, the parents are sent a card followed by a monthly mailing until the child is 3 years old.  This is an informative, helpful, and entertaining newsletter to guide their child in Christian faith. The child’s name is also placed on the Cradle Roll notice board.  At 3 years old, the child graduates from the Cradle Roll into Sunday School.

Salem invites any seventh and eighth grade student to join our confirmation program. During this two year-period, students are given an opportunity to work with classmates, class leaders, parents, and mentors to discover the development of their faith, what Christians believe, and what it personally means to be a Christian and church member. The Service of Confirmation is held on the first Sunday in May of eighth grade. Membership in the United Methodist Church is based upon a public witness of faith and our program is designed to help youth understand the witness they are going to make.

The purpose of the first year (usually seventh Grade) is to provide students with a basic understanding of our Christian heritage and faith. Questions that come to mind during the reading of the
scriptures and assignment are encouraged to be brought to class so that they can be discussed together. Classes are Wednesday evenings from 6-7 pm for 26 weeks.  The second year of the program (usually eighth grade) combines a mentor/confirmand team which will give students an individual and personal encounter in learning about and experiencing Jesus Christ and the
church. The team will meet at times when it’s convenient for them combined with meetings with the pastor every other month from October – April on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:00 pm.

For more information, to get a schedule of classes, or to pre-register, please call the church office at 921-8605.

Adult Education

There are a variety of growth opportunities for adults.  You don’t need to be a Bible scholar to participate.  All you need is the desire to know God and understand his will for your life.  Don’t be surprised if you develop a spiritual camaraderie with your fellow classmates!  Watch the worship bulletin inserts and the Kaleidoscope for dates, times, and sign-up information.
